Dentures in Indianapolis, IN.
At Louly Dentistry, our goal is always to save your natural teeth, but sometimes this is not possible. Even with the best care at home and professional treatment, sometimes teeth are lost or have to be extracted. If you are missing all or most of your teeth, dentures are an affordable, customizable way to restore your smile and ability to eat and speak clearly.
What are Dentures?
A denture, or a complete denture as it sometimes called, is an oral appliance that is inserted in the mouth to replace your natural teeth and provide support for the cheeks and lips.
Most dentures are made of acrylic, with the teeth made of plastic, porcelain, or a combination of both. Dentures can be made in two different ways.
- A conventional denture is made after all teeth have been extracted and the tissues (gums) have healed.
- An immediate denture is fabricated and inserted immediately after the teeth are extracted and the tissues are allowed to heal under the denture.
- An upper denture has acrylic, usually flesh colored, that covers the palate (roof of the mouth).
- A lower denture is shaped like a horseshoe to leave room for the tongue.
Our Process in Creating Dentures for Missing Teeth
The process starts the same for both conventional and immediate or same-day dentures. To prepare your mouth and gums for the dentures, any remaining teeth are extracted. If you are getting conventional dentures, we will place a temporary denture in your mouth to minimize swelling and allow your gums to heal beneath it. During this time, tissue shrinkage is normal and may affect the contours of the bony ridge of the jaw. We may need to adjust the fit or reline the dentures periodically to ensure they continue to fit properly as any swelling or jaw contours evolve.
The steps of designing, creating, and fabricating dentures typically follow the same pattern:
- Preparation: We take impressions and digital images, evaluate the coloring of your natural enamel, and create a denture design with digital smile design software.
- Treatment: At your next appointment, we extract any remaining teeth, and either your same-day dentures or a temporary denture is placed over the gums.
- Recovery: During recovery, any swelling of the gums will recede, and the contours of the bony ridge may change somewhat. You may experience some soreness where the dentures rub against the delicate tissues. You will also need a few days or weeks to adjust to speaking clearly with your dentures in place.
- Reline: To ensure a perfect fit, we will add a new layer of lining material inside the denture when the transition/healing phase is complete. The reline will reshape and cushion the inside of your dentures for a snug fit and greater comfort. Most individuals will need their immediate or same-day dentures relined about two or three months after their dentures are placed because the gum tissues and bone have changed significantly.
What to Expect with Your New Dentures
It takes most patients a few days or weeks to get used to wearing new dentures. They may feel like getting dentures for missing teeth has created a different set of problems because they do not immediately feel comfortable wearing them. But do not worry, this is normal and passes quickly. While they may feel loose or bulky at first, you quickly adapt, and they will feel like a normal part of your mouth soon. To make the adjustment easier, keep these tips in mind:
- Eat soft foods for the first few days.
- Make sure you brush them thoroughly and soak them in water every night.
- Practice speaking at home if your dentures slip when talking. Speaking slowly can help.
- If your dentures click when you talk, try biting down, then swallowing them back into place.
- If you continue to have issues, please get in touch with us at Indianapolis Phone Number 317-869-0000 and we will be happy to provide additional tips or see you at our office.
Am I a Good Candidate for Dentures?
Anyone in good general health may be a candidate for dentures. However, you must be willing to commit to caring for them properly, including brushing, flossing, and regular dental checkups. Replacing missing teeth with dentures is an affordable, non-invasive way to replace missing teeth that is ideal for anyone who does not want to undergo surgery or has a medical condition, such as a bleeding disorder, that precludes surgery.
